I see the green of a sprawling philodendron against the red of the fire escape, the brown of a roof, the blue of the sky. Inside, a bright bouquet of flowers in an old vase of Grandma’s sits on the nightstand.
I hear the 7 trains rumbling on aboveground tracks, an airplane taking off from LGA, a bird chirping, and the distant noise of traffic. Inside, a fan hums.
Laurence didn’t want breakfast this morning. He’ll have bagels, fruit, and boiled eggs at work as some of his coworkers are leaving the Medical Primary Care Clinic. I put hamburger to thaw on the kitchen counter. We’ll have meatballs for lunch. The apartment needs cleaning. It doesn’t take much to clean 755 square feet. I have pulled pork prepared in case the out of town brethren here sightseeing with their sons want to come for supper.
The recycle bag is full but the basement is closed for painting, so I can’t take it down. Yesterday, I couldn’t do laundry down there and had to go out to a Laundromat – like I did all the time in our mission years, but now I’m spoiled so I grumbled a bit and forgot the laundry soap at home and had to trot two blocks back to get it.
I expect an ordinary day, but God alone knows. I want to be clay in His hands, doing His will. May your day be blessed. Berniece
Good morning! It’s a lovely, cool morning in Galva, KS! The sunrise is a little later each morning, the robins aren’t almost bursting their throats singing praises, but the fall sounds are starting; crickets chirping, once in awhile the cardinal’s song, the noisy blue jays, and the sweet chip, chipping of the sparrows. We actually have a pair of finches or sparrows raising another set of little ones in the birdhouse/flower planter hanging on the porch.
So my question this morning is…one of my friends would like to join your blog following and I’m not sure how to get it to her. I’m not sure she has an email address; I’ll find out. As you can tell, I’m not techy in the least!!! I can’t even remember how I started getting your blog! Could you help me out when you have time, please? I’m always happy when I see An Ordinary Life notification on my email 🙂
Thank you,
Starla

Thanks, Starla. I’m still a Kansas girl and like hearing about the sights and sounds of home. Will one of my techy friends answer this? Yvette?

Did you have an Ordinary day today? My was not quite ordinary, it was very quiet. I’m fixing squashed potatoes for supper from my leftover Syracuse salt potatoes I made the other evening. Keep writing. I enjoy reading😊

Thanks, Bonnie. Our lives are quite different, but we both like to express ourselves by writing. I had a quiet day. This afternoon I walked to the Salvation Army store. On my walk I observed a Muslim woman dressed in an orange sari and wearing a mask. She was trying to break a branch in two and having a hard time of it. Coming home, I stopped at the Asian store for cabbage. Walking through there, smelling the smells, and seeing the sights made me happy that I live here. One thing I observed in there was a man popping his coworker’s back. I asked him, “Are your treatments free?” That got him going, but he didn’t talk English and I don’t talk Chinese. As near as I could make out he was saying that the man wouldn’t even buy him one little cup of coffee for the treatment he’d been given. 🤣 Tomorrow is market. The boss is in Kansas marrying off his son. Maybe we’ll have a party. 😎

Mary Jean Irion said, “Normal day, let me be aware of the treasure you are.” I think you are aware of the jewel that an ordinary day is, and shared the treasure with your readers. I especially love the word picture of the green philodendron against the red fire escape and the bouquet in the old vase. Ahhh.
