A Haven in the City

This is where we worship. God is in this place. It is our church home. The Word of truth is preached here. Its doors are open to everyone. This morning, there were around 50 people filling the seats in the sanctuary. Our skin was not all the same color. Most of us were not born in this city, and a number of us grew up in another country. Several in attendance this morning first met the people of God in this sanctuary, they were baptized here, and went to their first communion here. Yes, we have revival meetings here, and we know the warmth of commemorating the Lord’s supper.

Here’s a little word picture of the overflowing fellowship hall at lunchtime: I heard Spanish being spoken by a young man sent to the mission by his parents who are acquainted with the Nicaraguan missionaries. Adam from Burkana Faso came because of the missionaries in his country. I felt sure I was missing out as the people of four different African countries were in conversation some distance from where I sat at lunchtime. The two Bronx girls had their heads together in a discussion about Christian attire. Larry, who passes out tracts, said that it’s all about Jesus. I discussed changing NYC neighborhoods with another tract contract. The Africans drank most of the ginger beer that Ellen brought, but I got enough to know that it was delicious and should cure whatever ails me.

The sanctuary was full today. I can’t recall a time like this time with people coming to the mission searching for a church home. God is moving. The Light is shining. Pray for the church in NYC.

How has Sugar Hill Mennonite Mission been a haven for you?

Sounds fascinating. I visited NYC for the first time in 2018. I tried to come to a Bible study or something during the 5 days I was there. The subway system was rather confusing, and the few employees underground were unhelpful, rude, and unfriendly (as most people seem to be in the metropolis!). Ended up going an hour in the wrong direction….Never did find the mission.

There’s a lot of friendly, helpful people in our city. Sorry, you didn’t meet them.

Does Adam still come to church? He’s a friendly chap. He swept in our shop as Doug and Greg worked on their truss project. I’m glad to hear he came to church. Greg said he had no intention of joining the church. He just wanted to come to the US. But how many times can you willing sit under the sound of the Gospel and not become convicted? I hated to see him leave! We have a 30 yr old Haitian brother here, actually he was reaccepted here. I thought it would be nice if we had another African American in our midst! We have a few Haitians from the “famous” Springfield area that attend once on a while.

I put a turkey in the oven last night cause he had been in the freezer for a couple years!! So now I have the task before me of deboning him. And then he’ll go right back in the freezer to hopefully be used for something. I don’t know why I bought him!! This family doesn’t like turkey!

Keith is in Oklahoma City waiting to load Monday morning. He’ll be gone all week. He’s on a two week run trying to make some extra pennies for the holidays. I don’t mind him being gone but it does get a bit lonely at times.

The children are all going to be home for the Sunday before Christmas. So I’m working at getting the house ready for them. Lowell’s will stay till after Christmas but Shelwyn has to get back to work Tuesday.

My classes are kinda hit and miss at school this time of year with all the program practice. I enjoy getting off early some days! I have a full busy schedule this year. There’s not enough of me to get everything done so they hired an aid this year also. I like my work!

Okay I need to get to this turkey! Ugh!!

Have a lovely day! And Merry Christmas! Barb

Ps. We had a very enjoyable meaningful visit with Darrell and Cindy on our way home from Kansas after Thanksgiving! It was so special! Highlight of the trip!
