The sun is setting in NYC. We had the opportunity today to sing gospel hymns with young men, tract workers, and mission couples in the Times Square subway station. Different ones handed out tracts and children’s Bible story books. Trains roared through the station, but we sang on, and the Light shone.
God spoke to me once again through the verse that He used in 1988 to bring me here: “When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Mark 2:17).
First, I must tell you that I have been sick. I have been a sinner. Even today, I am nothing but wicked except for the blood of Jesus. And because of my Savior, I am a saint.
Let me never forget this. My own righteousness is nothing but filthy rags. However, because of Jesus, I have a story to tell
to the girls that were very scantily dressed.
to the young man who said he had never before heard the name of Jesus.
to the one who claimed to not believe in heaven and hell.
to the ones who snickered as they walked past.
to the ones who sang along.
to those taking pictures.
to the tourists.
There are millions of sinners in this city. The woman caught in adultery is here. The heathen are just outside our door, dancing to an unknown god. The beggars sit nearby with alcohol in their hands. Gross sin abounds.
I think on these things and then I see Jesus. His compassion. His feeding the multitudes when his disciples only wanted to send all those people away. How he made breakfast for the one who denied him. How He loved and forgave a sinner like me.
And in the end what I really want to say is that if Jesus can save me, He can save you. Jesus loves you, me, and all the people in New York City.
