Come, gather at the well with me as I share these stories from my desk behind the fire escape. I glance through the greenery of the houseplants on the windowsill to where sunshine glints on the bright red paint of the iron bars and steps. I stop writing to look above rooftops, above the red brick of high-rise apartment buildings, and on up to the sky. God dwells high above an apartment in Queens, but he is here too – behind the fire escape.

Things have happened since I wrote Waymarks of Home. Just like you, Laurence and I have experienced sanctification, the nitty-gritty of daily life, sickness and health, joy and sorrow. Your life happens in Kansas or Timbuktu while ours plays out in Queens. I’d like to title this Growing Old Gracefully, but I’m not there yet. Maybe later. Until then, Laurence and I have some mountains to climb, some ethnic foods to try, and some city streets to explore.
