The Race

“Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).

In amazement, I read the above verses this morning. God knows today is the NYC Marathon. He could see that it would be the talk of the town, bonding commuters on the subway who would be going to cheer their loved ones on to the finish line. He knows the one who will receive the prize. He knows my needs today.

The Spirit reminds me that I too am in a race. I am not running in the marathon today. I am not after the corruptible prize; rather an incorruptible one that does not fade away.

The passing of Minister Isaac Akinyombo, taught me again that here “we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come” (Hebrews 13:14). I want to be able to say with Paul, Papa, and all the saints who have gone before: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7).
